Doing 100 push-ups a day is stupid

For the month of April I decided I would challenge myself physically and do 100 push-ups a day. A very straightforward challenge however it can get difficult to do it day in and day out.

The main reason why I decided to do it was actually to build up strength so that I can do 100 pull-ups a day. There was no real doubt that I could do the push-ups it was more to prepre myself for the real mammoth challenge (well for me I see it that way).

It was only once a week that I chose to rest while every other day I was in my room doing those push-ups, sometimes even rather late for I came home late. But from this experience I took out one big lesson.

That was plain dumb.




Regardless of my results the repetition of doing the same exercise was not beneficial to me. It’s like Einstein’s famous definition of stupidity: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

The problem with working at a high-intensity on your muscles has a lot of risks. After a workout your muscles form a small tear in them. When you give it time to rest they repair themselves by pumping extra blood causing them to grow larger, when you don’t, the muscles keep tearing until it gets nasty.

You also risk burning out and even causing injury if you work too hard on a muscle group repetitively. If your tendons don’t have time to rest they become inflamed.

I also worked on just one muscle group for an entire month, leaving the rest of my body remaining at the same level of strength, or even reduced. So I would suggest working on all main muscle groups and target the ones that are weak and need work.

So play it smart and don’t be dumb.

  1. There was a time when I was doing over 500 pushups a day, and included 250 lunges per day. I was 55 or more at that time. Not much pain after getting used to it. And the lunges caused my running speed to increase.

    1. Wow that’s awesome. I guess it’s just important to listen to your body and not overwork it. But if you have gotten so strong after those push-ups and lunges you will most likely not get any stronger due to repetition of the excercise, and some muscles will not be as developed due to the lack of other muscles groups being worked. It’s a good workout to start with and build strength but not entirely one I would stick to for a long time. But thanks for reading and your testimony!


  2. Yup shouldn’t neglect the other parts of your body. On alternate days of high-intensity gotta let the body recover but could do other exercises (pilates, yoga, jogging, walking). Hang in there and stay healthy and fit! 🙂 — amor
